96 rebels killed in boko haram attack army says 17 soldiers martyred in retaliation

Chad’s military said Boko Haram rebels killed 17 Chadian soldiers in an attack on a military post over the weekend, with 96 attackers also killed in the west of the country. Army spokesman General Isaac Achekh said on national television Sunday night that the attack in the Lake Chad region occurred on Saturday. Achekh, referring to the military operation launched to expel Boko Haram terrorists from Lake Chad, said that the army reassures the population that the situation is under control and plans to track down remaining elements as part of Operation Hasknight. The action is ongoing.

Chad’s army established peace in 2020 by conducting a successful operation to destroy militant bases, but an atmosphere of violence and fear has once again become prevalent there. Last month, 40 soldiers were killed in an attack on a military base. President Mahamat Debi Itno then ordered the launch of an operation to oust Boko Haram militants from the Lake Chad region.
