District Magistrate Rajendra Pensia on Sunday confirmed the discovery of a ‘stepwell’ (stepwell) spread over an area of 400 square metres. This structure, consisting of about four chambers, includes floors made of marble. “The structure, which has about four chambers, includes floors made of marble and bricks,” he said. The second and third floors are made of marble, while the upper floors are made of bricks.” He also said, “It is said that this stepwell was built during the time of the grandfather of the king of Bilari.”
The discovery came after the reopening of a Shiva-Hanuman temple in the district, which was closed for 46 years. The DM further estimated that the structure could be more than 150 years old. Municipal Corporation Executive Officer Krishna Kumar Sonkar said, ‘As soon as we came to know that there is a stepwell here, we started digging work. “We will continue our work as we get more information.” In another related development, an ASI team also surveyed the Kalki Vishnu temple in Sambhal, inspecting five temples and 19 wells in the area. DM Pensia said the inspection lasted for 8-10 hours and covered around 24 areas.
