Congress has suffered a crushing defeat in Samaguri constituency. He had this seat since 2000. Which helped BJP and its allies to achieve a clean sweep in the by-elections held for five assembly seats in Assam. The BJP contested three seats and its candidates won each one. Diplu Ranjan Sarma in Samaguri, Diganta Ghatowal in Behali and Nihar Ranjan Das in Dholai. It supported its allies in two other assembly constituencies – Assam Gana Parishad’s Diptimayee Choudhary won the Bongaigaon seat, while United People’s Party Liberal’s Nirmal Kumar Brahma won Sidley with a significant lead.

Four of these seats were previously held by MLAs from the same parties, with the BJP’s biggest win being in Samaguri, a seat with a large minority population that was represented by veteran Assam Congress leader Rakibul Hussain for five consecutive terms since 2000. Before Rakibul’s long tenure as MLA, his father Nurul Hussain, also a Congress leader, had represented the seat twice in the 1980s and 1990s. In the by-election, Congress had fielded Rakibul’s 26-year-old son Tanjeel from the seat, Rakibul was leading his campaign.

The campaign seat witnessed several incidents of election-related violence, resulting in injuries to workers of both parties. The trend kept changing between the two candidates during the counting of votes throughout the day. However, as counting continued till 5:30 pm, after 15 out of 19 rounds of counting, Diplu Ranjan Sarma was leading by 22,833 votes. After his victory became clear, Sarma described his victory as the result of a story of development. When we do politics, these things (voter demographics) happen, but I personally never thought of people as minority or majority.
