Assam prominent player in India’s energy sector: Chief Minister

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma said on Wednesday that the state remains a prominent player in the energy sector of India, where there is a huge hydrocarbon reserves and a skilled workforce.

On the conclusion of the ‘Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit’ here, the Chief Minister said that Assam has played a leading role in India’s oil industry with a joint refining capacity of four current refineries and 74.5 lakh tonnes, which has ensured continuous supply of fuel to the country.

In a session organized on the subject of ‘Assam’s full use of energy capacity’ of Assam: Construction of oil and gas infrastructure, innovation and global energy changes’, he said that the oil industry gained momentum at the end of the 19th century.

The state has 12 percent of the country’s natural gas reserves and produces half of India’s natural gas. This session discussed the strategic initiative of Assam in the oil and gas sector, which paid special attention to energy infrastructure development, innovation and investment opportunities in accordance with global energy changes.

He said that major companies in the petrolician sector like Brahmaputra Craer and Polymer Limited (BCPL), Assam Petro-Cammicals Limited (APL) and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) also contribute well to the state’s revenue, whose royalty and tax amount is more than Rs 11,700 crore annually. On this occasion, the Chief Minister inaugurated several CNG retail projects in Kokrajhar and Amguri through online.
