Bandana Kumari has won the elections from Shalimar Bagh assembly constituency three times in a row, has been the vice president of the assembly.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Bandana Kumari is an Indian politician who currently serves as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Shalimar Bagh constituency since 2013. She has served as the Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly and former president of the party’s women’s wing, Aam Aadmi Party Mahila Shakti. When AAP won 67 out of 70 seats in Delhi. On 12 February 2015, it announced that Bandana Kumari would be its candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker of the Sixth Legislative Assembly of Delhi. On 23 February, he was formally elected vice-president, while Ram Niwas Goel became president.

Bandana Kumari was born on 11 March 1974 in a Bhumihar Brahmin family in Samastipur, Bihar. His father’s name is Braj Kishore Sharma. He completed his 12th from Ram Briksha Benipuri School, Muzaffarpur under BSE (State) board in 1991. Bandana earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons) degree from BR Ambedkar Bihar University, Muzaffarpur in 1994. Her husband’s name is Sajjan Kumar. According to the 2013 affidavit, both were self-employed. She is currently a housewife and a social worker. She is a resident of Shalimar Bagh, Delhi with her husband and son.

In the December 2013 assembly elections, Bandana Kumari was elected MLA from Shalimar Bagh constituency of Delhi, defeating three-time MLA Ravinder Nath Bansal of Bharatiya Janata Party by a margin of 10,651 votes, getting 47,235 votes. He was immediately hailed as the “Giant Killer”. Bandana’s victory was considered a shocking defeat for the BJP as the constituency was traditionally considered a party stronghold. This constituency was with BJP since 1993. Shalimar Bagh was also the constituency of BJP chief minister Sahib Singh Verma in 1993 and Bansal held the seat for 15 years.
MLA Bandana became the president of Mahila Shakti, the women’s wing of Aam Aadmi Party. He raised issues of women’s safety in the city. AAP’s women wing and youth wing launched 22 Gramin Seva Vehicles for women and senior citizens from Delhi Metro stations in December 2014, to ensure women’s safety and woo women voters. Bandana was re-nominated as a candidate from Shalimar Bagh in the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections. She contested the elections on the issues of women’s safety and corruption. Bandana defeated BJP’s Rekha Gupta, vice-chairperson of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Standing Committee, by a margin of 10,978 votes. He also got more votes (62,656) than in the 2013 elections.
