Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia has been sent by Mohali district court on seven days police remand. On Thursday, he was produced in court by the Vigilance Bureau amid tight security arrangements. Akali Dal activists have been protesting since the arrest of Majithia, so a heavy police force was deployed around the court premises. On Majithia’s 7 -day police custody, Punjab AAP President Aman Arora said that the court has also admitted that further investigation is needed. The Punjab government and the Vigilance Department raised the case in the court with full facts. Majithia was arrested by the vigilance team on Wednesday in the case of drug smuggling and alleged money laundering related to disproportionate assets. He is accused of whitening “drug money” worth more than Rs 540 crore. Prior to his arrest, Vigilance officials raided several locations including Majithia’s residence in Chandigarh. Speaking on the incident, Punjab minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal said that the state police and vigilance teams searched nine places in Amritsar and a total of 25 places across Punjab, including the premises of Majithia.

He further alleged that the issue of drug trade is related to the tenure of the Akali Dal-BJP government. Dhaliwal said, “Many drug smugglers were caught in his time and made statements against Bikram Singh Majithia, but no action was taken then.” Majithia, who is the brother -in -law of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, is already facing investigation in the 2021 drugs case. During the raid, the Vigilance team from Mohali faced opposition to Majithia and his wife Ganiv Kaur, who is the Akali MLA, who accused the officials of forcibly entering their house in Green Avenue on Wednesday morning.
