Belagavi (Karnataka). Congress General Secretary K. C. Venugopal on Tuesday targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government at the Center for introducing two bills in the Lok Sabha regarding the arrangement for holding simultaneous elections across the country, saying that ‘one nation, one election’. The clear intention behind is ‘one nation, no elections’. He termed ‘One Nation, One Election’ as ‘impractical’ and expressed doubt over the passage of related bills in Parliament.
Responding to a question, Venugopal said, “The intent and clear intention of one nation, one election is – one nation, no election. The main agenda of BJP is one nation, no elections. They don’t want a democratic process at all. To gradually destroy the entire democratic process, they are bringing this new idea of one nation, one election. Karnataka has its own speciality, the Congress general secretary told reporters here. Kerala has its own specialty, similarly Manipur and Jammu Kashmir also have their own specialty. Unity in diversity is the beauty of this country. These people (BJP) do not believe in democracy, diversity.
Bills providing for simultaneous elections across the country were introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday after a heated debate. Opposition parties described the draft laws – a Constitution Amendment Bill and an Ordinary Bill – as an attack on the federal structure. However, the government rejected this allegation. These bills were introduced after the opposition demanded division of votes.
