The Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI probe into the alleged custodial torture of a woman arrested during a protest against the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The court said that the two petitioners (both women) have alleged physical torture by the police during their custody, while the report of the jail officer has confirmed such act on one of them.
Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj directed the CBI to thoroughly investigate the alleged physical torture inflicted on one of them during their police custody from September 8 to 11.
The court said, “The decision to hand over the case to the CBI is based on the need for an impartial and independent investigation into the serious allegations of custodial torture.” Both the petitioners said that they met with a doctor at RG Kar Hospital on August 9. Had participated in several peaceful rallies demanding justice in the alleged rape and murder case.
Passing the order, Justice Bhardwaj directed the state government to file an affidavit opposing the allegations made by the petitioners within four weeks and the petitioners to respond to the same within a week. The court directed the CBI investigating officer to file the report by November 15. The court listed the case for further hearing on November 18.
