Canada G7 Summit | PM Modi arrives at Canada for G7 Summit, will meet various leaders, ‘Emphasis on global south priorities’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Calgary in Canada on Tuesday, June 17, where he will attend the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. This is an important moment in India-Canada relations after the stressful diplomatic relations after the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. After reaching Canada, Prime Minister Modi said that he would meet various leaders at the G7 Summit and insist on the priorities of the global South.This is Modi’s first visit to Canada in a decade. During this time, the Prime Minister will meet with the leaders of the world and discuss important global issues including energy security, technology and innovation.

Prime Minister Modi reached Canada on Monday evening (local time) from Cyprus at the invitation of Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada. The conference will run from 16 June to 17 June in Kanainiscis. This is the Prime Minister’s sixth consecutive participation at the G-7 summit. The Ministry of External Affairs said in New Delhi, “At the summit, the Prime Minister will exchange views on important global issues including energy security, technology and innovation, especially AI-energy relations and quantum issues with leaders of other invited countries and international organizations at the summit.”

The Prime Minister will also hold several bilateral meetings during the summit. The conference is being held a month after India started ‘Operation Sindoor’. Under the ‘Operation Sindoor’, terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir was targeted in response to the 22 April Pahalgam attack. The invitation given by Carney to Modi to attend the G-7 summit is a sign of the new government’s intention to improve relations with India that reached the worst position after the assassination of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

In October last year, India withdrew its High Commissioner and five other diplomats as Ottawa tried to connect him with the Nijjar case. India had expelled the same number of diplomats from Canada. India accused Justin Trudeau’s government of allowing Khalistani supporters to work from the land of Canada.

Economist Carney took over as the new Prime Minister of Canada after Trudeau stepped away from the top post. In the last few months, security authorities from India and Canada have resumed contact and both sides are considering the possibility of appointing new High Commissioners.

The G-7 summit is taking place amidst geopolitical tensions, including increasing tension in West Asia as well as the business war began in West Asia in view of the attack on each other in Iran and Israel. ‘Group of Seven’ (G -7) is an informal group of seven advanced economies of the world – France, America, Britain, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada and the European Union.

Its members meet at the G-7 summit every year to discuss global economic and geopolitical issues. India, one of the world’s top five economies, has been regularly invited to the contact session of the G-7 summit.
