Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan courted fresh controversy after making indecent remarks against Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) chief Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal. Pinarayi was highly critical of Thangal at a campaign rally on Sunday for P Sarin, the LDF-backed independent candidate for the Palakkad by-election. He said that Thangal was behaving like a regular follower of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Satheesan accused Pinarayi Vijayan of speaking in the same voice as the BJP state chief. The Congress leader said that both are talking in the same way. Meanwhile, IUML’s Malayalam mouthpiece Chandrika also criticized Pinarayi. An opinion article in Chandrika said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s attempt to evaluate Thangal’s qualifications reflected his and his party’s close ties with communal forces.
