East Asia Summit an opportunity to further deepen ties with ASEAN countries: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed confidence that his visit to Laos to attend the ASEAN-India and East Asia summits will further deepen ties with the ASEAN countries.

In a statement issued before leaving for Laos, Modi said that India is completing the decade of “Act East” policy this year. “I will review progress in our comprehensive strategic partnership with ASEAN leaders and chart the future direction of our cooperation,” the Prime Minister said.

He said the East Asia Summit will provide an opportunity to discuss challenges to peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. Modi said India has close cultural and civilizational ties with the region, including the People’s Democratic Republic of Laos (Lao PDR), which are enriched by the shared heritage of Buddhism and Ramayana.

“I look forward to my meetings with the Lao PDR leadership to further strengthen our bilateral relations,” he said. Modi will reach Vientiane today on a two-day visit at the invitation of Lao Prime Minister Sonexa Sifanadon.

During this time he will participate in the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the 19th East Asia Summit. Prime Minister Modi will participate in the ASEAN-India conference for the 10th time. He will review the progress of relations between India and ASEAN along with other Heads of Government of ASEAN countries and will also decide the direction of mutual relations.
