Vikram Misri, who will take charge as Foreign Secretary on July 15, 2024, is a career diplomat of the 1989 batch of the Indian Foreign Service. During his extensive career as a government official he has served in various capacities. During his assignment in New Delhi, notably in the Ministry of External Affairs, he worked on the Pakistan Desk and was also part of the staff of former external affairs ministers IK Gujral and Pranab Mukherjee.
The central government extended the tenure of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who was scheduled to retire on November 30 this year. In a notification issued, the Center announced the extension of Misri’s services till July 14, 2026 or until further orders. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on November 30 approved the extension of Vikram Misri as Foreign Secretary beyond his superannuation date of July 14, 2026 or until further orders, whichever is earlier, in terms of the provisions of the FR. It is pertinent to note that the provisions of FR 56(D) allow extension of service of a Foreign Secretary beyond the date of retirement in public interest.

He has also served as Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office and as Private Secretary to three Prime Ministers of India: IK Gujral, Dr. Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi. In his foreign assignments, Ambassador Misri visited Brussels, Tunis, Islamabad and Washington DC. Have served in. He was also India’s Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and India’s Consul General in Munich.
