The Center will send more than 10,000 troops to ethnic violence-hit Manipur, taking the total number of companies of central forces in neighboring Myanmar to 288. With 90 companies or about 10,800 personnel from the central forces, the total number of companies deployed in Manipur has reached 288, Manipur Security Advisor Kuldeep Singh told reporters in the state capital Imphal. He said that we are getting 90 companies of the forces. A large part of it has already reached Imphal. We are deploying forces to protect lives and properties of civilians and to monitor sensitive areas and points.

Singh said security forces have so far recovered around 3,000 weapons looted from the police armory since the clashes between the Meitei community and Kuki tribes began in May 2023. He said all forces including police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Army, Assam Rifles, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Sashastra Seema Bal are working together.

At the same time, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Friday said the suspects involved in looting the property of ministers and MLAs during the protests on November 16 have been identified and legal action has been initiated in this regard. He condemned incidents like burning of a minister’s late father’s photograph in his house, looting of an MLA’s residence and firing at a car showroom and wondered whether such acts could be part of a movement.
