Matuil Haq Khalis, head of the country’s environmental protection agency, told The Associated Press that Afghanistan needs international support to deal with extreme weather such as irregular rainfall, prolonged drought and flash floods. “All countries must join hands and tackle the problem of climate change,” Khalis said, speaking through a translator at this year’s talks in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Afghanistan has been severely affected by climate change, with recent assessments by climate experts making it the sixth most climate vulnerable country in the world. Heavy rains hit northern Afghanistan in March, resulting in flash floods that killed more than 300 people. Climate scientists have found that extreme rainfall in the country has become 25% more frequent in the last 40 years.
