New Delhi. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya wrote a letter to gymnast Dipa Karmakar expressing surprise at her decision to retire from sports. Dipa became the first Indian female gymnast to qualify for the Olympics, finishing fourth in the Rio Olympics 2016. He said goodbye to the game on Monday. Mandaviya said in a letter to Dipa, “I came to know that you have retired from gymnastics. I am surprised at your decision but I have full confidence that you must have taken this decision keeping in mind the important priorities and experiences of life. I fully respect your decision.”
He said, “Your journey in gymnastics, which started at the age of just six, has been extremely inspiring. Despite facing many difficulties in this game, you touched the heights of success and made the country proud. Being honored with prestigious awards like Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna and Padmashree is a proof of your unique contribution.
The Sports Minister further wrote, “Your adding a new chapter to Indian gymnastics by participating in the Olympics and becoming the first Indian woman to participate in this sport is not only the result of your personal hard work but also a matter of pride for the entire country.” Your performance especially in the Produnova Vault has been exceptional. Your achievements have not only inspired sports lovers but have also given courage, especially to our daughters, to realize their dreams in sports.” He said, ”That historic moment in the Olympics when you missed a medal by just 0.15 points. You missed it, yet you won the hearts of the entire nation with your patience and dedication.” Mandaviya wrote, ”This journey of yours is a priceless heritage for the country and I hope that you will use this unique talent and experience of yours. Will share with the coming generations.
