In view of Pakistan -sponsored terrorist attacks in Pahalgam, India has intensified its strategic response not only in diplomatic and military but also in the field of hydrology – by suspending the Indus Water Treaty (IWT), which controls the water sharing of Pakistan from the Indus river system.
Pakistan on Monday urged India to restore the Indus Water Treaty, which New Delhi announced to adjourn a day after the Pahalgam terror attack. Pakistan said that the recent verdict of the Permanent Arbitration Court at Hague shows that the agreement is still “valid and functional”.
As per the provisions of the Indus Water Treaty, some aspects of the design of two hydroelectric projects were raised by Pakistan, the proceedings took place in the Permanent Arbitration Court, which India never recognized. India strongly dismissed the decision on Friday, saying that it had never recognized the so -called structure of dispute resolution with Pakistan.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office said in a statement issued on Monday that the supplementary decision pronounced by the Arbitration Court on June 27 “confirms the situation of Pakistan that the Indus Water Treaty is valid and functional, and India has no right to take unilateral action about it.” The statement said, “We urge India to immediately restore the normal work of the Indus Water Treaty and fulfill its obligations and fully fulfill the treaty of the treaty. Do.”
Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said in a separate statement that the arbitration court’s decision has confirmed that the Indus Water Treaty is completely valid. He said in a post on the social media platform ‘X’ on Monday, “Pakistan welcomes the supplementary decision of the Mediator Court that confirms its jurisdiction in the Kishanganga-night case.
This decision confirms that the Indus Water Treaty is completely valid. India cannot unilaterally postpone it. Countries are measured by following international agreements. The Indus Water Treaty should be retained both literally and the emotion.
