The statement said the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will continue to enforce US immigration laws and take strong action against those entering illegally and encourage the use of legal routes. It said DHS repatriated more than 1,60,000 individuals in fiscal year 2024 and conducted more than 495 international extradition flights to more than 145 countries, including India. DHS has evacuated people from many countries around the world in the past year, including Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Egypt, Mauritania, Senegal, Uzbekistan, China and India.

It added that the department regularly liaises with foreign governments throughout the hemisphere and the world to accept the repatriation of their citizens who have no legal basis to remain in the US. It said this was one of many tools the US used to reduce irregular migration, promote the use of safe, lawful and orderly routes, and hold transnational criminal networks accountable for the trafficking and exploitation of vulnerable people.
