Lieutenant General Mohammad Aseem Malik, head of Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI, has been given the additional charge of National Security Advisor at midnight. Pakistan is currently nervous about the adjacent military attack by the neighboring country of India. Lieutenant General Malik is currently serving as Director General of the Pakistani Intelligence Agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and will take over the additional charge of NSA.

He is the 10th NSA of the country, but this is the first time that a serving ISI chief has been given the responsibility of two major positions together. Malik was appointed Director General of ISI in October 2024. The notification states, “Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik HI (M), DG (I), will take over the additional charge of National Security Advisor with immediate effect.” In these years, he has led various positions in the army. The post of Pak NSA was vacant from April 2022, when the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government was removed from power. At that time Dr. Moeed Yusuf was working as NSA.
The appointment has been made in the midst of increasing tension with India after the terrorist attack on 22 April in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. 26 people were killed in this attack. Lieutenant General Malik earlier commanded the ‘Infantry Division’ in Balochistan and the ‘Infantry Brigade’ in Waziristan. He has also been awarded the ‘Sard of Honor’. Meanwhile, Defense Minister Khwaja Asif said that there is a possibility of Indian military infiltration. He said that Pakistan is on high alert and will consider the use of nuclear weapons only when its existence is directly threatened.

India’s strict reaction after the Pahalgam attack has made both the military and civil leadership of Pakistan restless. In response, Islamabad has deployed officials in major international capitals, hidden terrorist properties and strengthened its position on its border. The resistance front (TRF), a proxy group associated with the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, initially took responsibility for the Pahalgam attack, but later withdrew his claim under pressure from Pakistan’s defense establishment.
