The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday sought response from the Union Home Ministry on a PIL that claimed that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi holds British citizenship. The court has asked the ministry to file the report within three weeks. The next hearing on the case is on December 19, 2024. Petitioner S Vignesh Shishir said he has submitted all the documents and evidence to the court.

He said that we have full confidence that whatever we have said will be found correct. CBI has also investigated the case, important evidence has been provided. Gandhi also has British citizenship, December 19 is the next date, by then the Home Ministry will also have to file its reply. Earlier on 6 November, the Delhi High Court was informed that a CBI inquiry into Gandhi’s citizenship had been initiated on a PIL being heard by the Allahabad High Court. When the petitioner, a Karnataka BJP worker, said he had filed a PIL in the Allahabad High Court, a bench of Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said it did not want any contradictory order to be passed.

The bench, while allowing S Vignesh Shishir to file an affidavit on relevant developments following his PIL in the Allahabad High Court, said there cannot be two parallel petitions on the same cause of action. The case before the Delhi High Court was on a plea by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, who had sought direction to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to decide on his representation seeking cancellation of Gandhi’s Indian citizenship. Swamy, in his plea, also sought direction to the Home Ministry to submit a status report on the representation filed by him against Gandhi, the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha.
