Ranchi. Indian batsman Ishan Kishan returns as captain of the Jharkhand Ranji team after being dropped from the central contract by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after his controversial exit last season. Ishan, who became a regular in India’s white-ball team after Rishabh Pant’s road accident in December 2022, took a break during India’s tour of South Africa last year. After the break, he did not take part in any official BCCI match even though the board had stressed on the players to give priority to domestic cricket.
The 26-year-old made a comeback in February and played in the privately organized DY Patil T20 Cup ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL). This led to a debate about the balance between franchise cricket and state commitments. His absence from domestic cricket during this period has left him out of the BCCI’s 2023-24 central contract. However, Ishan attracted the attention of BCCI with his strong performances in domestic cricket. Last month, he scored a century for India C in the Duleep Trophy. He then also represented Rest of India in the Irani Cup and scored 38 runs in the only innings.
Now as the captain of the 16-member Jharkhand team, he is ready to lead the young team. Last season’s captain Virat Singh will be the vice-captain and Kumar Kushagra will be the wicketkeeper. Jharkhand will start its Ranji Trophy campaign against Assam in Guwahati in Elite Group D. Last season, Jharkhand finished third from bottom in Group A. They won two, lost two and drew three of their seven matches. Jharkhand’s selection committee chairman Subroto Das told ‘ESPNcricinfo’, “Ishaan is an experienced player and has international experience. We have selected a young team. Saurabh Tiwary, Shahbaz Nadeem and Varun Aaron all retired after last season so we had to rethink our strategy. ,
