Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that the body of senior Hamas leader Mohammad Sinwar was found in a tunnel under the European Hospital in Khan Younis in Gaza. He died in the Israeli air strike on 13 May. Mohammad Sinwar was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind behind the attack on Israel on 7 October. A joint statement by IDF and Shin Bet confirmed that Sinwar and Rafa Brigade Commander Mohammad Shabaneh were killed at an underground command center below the Hospital. Intelligence materials and other bodies as well as belongings related to them were also recovered. The footage issued by the IDF shows dragging a corpse from a tunnel under the hospital. Defense Minister Israel Catz praised the operation, called Sinwar a staunch killer and warned the remaining Hamas leaders that they were next. He specially named Gaza-based commander Az al-Din al-Hadad and Qatar-based leader Khalil al-Hayya.
Hamas Commander Muhammad Shabana and senior leader Mahdi Kuwar were also killed in the May 13 attack. Hamas’s October 7 attack killed at least 1,180 people and 252 hostage. There is still a possibility of 32 out of 55 hostages in Gaza.
