Israeli airstrikes targeted central Beirut, shaking the Lebanese capital as Israel launched its offensive against the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. Lebanese media reported that at least 47 people have died in this attack. Apart from this, 22 people have been injured. Reuters witnesses said several powerful explosions rocked Beirut around 4 a.m. (0200 GMT). Two security sources said at least four rockets were fired in the attack. The sound of sirens could be heard as ambulances rushed to the blast site in Beirut’s Basta area.

After nearly a year of cross-border hostilities caused by the Gaza War, Israel launched a major offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon in September, carrying out airstrikes on wide areas of Lebanon and sending troops into the south. The conflict began when Hezbollah opened fire in solidarity with its Palestinian ally Hamas after it launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.
