The Lokayukta dismissed his petitions and said that each has been given compensation of one lakh rupees. The families demanded to increase the compensation amount.

Exposing gross failure in discharge of duties, the Bombay High Court (HC) ordered the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to pay Rs 50 lakh as compensation to the families of eight victims of the eight victims who died in a fire in a hotel in Kurla in 2015. Due to BMC failure to take action, the illegalness in the Kinara Hotel continued and finally a fire and loss of life and property. On 16 October 2015, eight people were killed in a fire at Hotel City Kinara in Kurla. Seven of these people were students aged 18–20 years, and the eighth victim Virar had a 31-year-old design engineer.

A bench of Justice BP Kolabawala and Justice Firdaus Pooniwala said that it was shocking that BMC knew that the hotel did not have the required permission from the fire department, yet he did not take any action against the hotel. The court said that if the BMC had taken quick action, the fire incident would not happen. The bench said that negligence by BMC and violation of legal duties is the closest cause of fire, and the civil body can be held responsible for the functions and omissions of its officers. It said that due to the life of eight people, under Article 21 of the Constitution, the right to life of their families has been severely violated.
