An 18-year-old student of a medical college in Gujarat’s Patan district died on Saturday night after he was allegedly left standing for three hours during ragging by seniors in his hostel. Police on Sunday said they have sought a report from the college’s anti-ragging committee, while institute officials said the incident is being investigated. Anil Natwarbhai from Jesda village in Surendranagar district was a first year student at GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Dharpur, Methania Patan.

Student dies during ragging
Anil Methania, a first-year student at Gujarat’s Dharpur Medical College, died after he was allegedly forced to stand for three hours during ragging by senior students. Late on Sunday night, Methania became unconscious and was taken to the hospital, where he died. After Anil’s death, his family accused senior students of ragging and claimed that this led to his death. According to him, all the first year students were attending the introductory session that night and were allegedly forced to stand for three hours, after which Anil became unconscious. The family is now demanding strict action to prevent such incidents in future.

Had to wait for three hours from seniors
Talking about the incident, Dharpur Medical College Dean Hardik Shah confirmed that Anil became unconscious and was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead. He said that during interrogation the students revealed that the introductory session was actually going on at the time of the incident. The college has informed both Anil’s family and the police. Shah said that the exact cause of death will be known only after the post mortem report. Patan SP Dr Ravindra Patel said, “We have registered a report of accidental death at Balisana police station. We have written to the anti-ragging committee of the medical college to submit its report as soon as possible. We will take necessary action based on it.” do.”
Anti-ragging committee of the college will investigate
Meanwhile, the college dean said the college’s anti-ragging committee will investigate and question all the students involved. If ragging comes to light, strict action will be taken against those responsible. Sidhpur Deputy SP KK Pandya said that after receiving information about the student’s death, the police immediately registered a case of accidental death under Section 174 of the Indian Penal Code and started investigation. Preliminary investigation suggests that the incident occurred during the introduction session of first year students. Police have asked for a detailed report from the college, on the basis of which further action will be taken.
