Kerala Rain: Widespread damage due to torrential rains in Kerala, IMD released ‘Red Alert’ in eight districts

After the red alert is issued for heavy rains, a holiday has been declared on Friday in all educational institutions in Kottayam, Kannur and Kasargod as a precaution. Educational institutions including professional colleges, Kendriya Vidyalayas, Tuition Centers, Special Classes and Anganwadi will remain closed in these three districts. District collectors said that the examinations already fixed will be conducted on time. Meanwhile, Mahatma Gandhi University announced that all the examinations to be held on May 30 have been postponed.

After the monsoon knocking in Kerala, there is rains, due to which there has been widespread damage. At the same time, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) released ‘Red Alert’ for eight districts of the state on Thursday. Due to heavy rains and strong winds, many trees were uprooted in the state and waterlogging and flood situation arose in the nearby areas of low -lying areas and rivers. People have been taken to relief camps in mountainous areas of state like Wayanad.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) said that due to heavy rains, the water level of various rivers Manimala, Achankovil, Meenachil, Koraapujha and Kabani is continuously increasing. KSDMA has advised people living close to the coast to be vigilant. INCOIS has advised fishermen and other residents of the coastal areas to be vigilant, as there is a possibility of waves of 1.2 to 3.7 meters high on the coasts of Kerala by 8.30 pm on Friday night.

INCOIS has released ‘Orange Alert’ for the coastal regions of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Thrissur in the state till Friday night and ‘Orange Alert’ for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kasargod and Kannur districts. It states that there is a possibility of turmoil in the sea, so all activities including fishing and tourism should be avoided. Earlier, IMD released ‘Red Alert’ for Thursday in Pattamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod districts and ‘Orange Alert’ for the remaining six districts.

Apart from this, ‘Red Alert’ has been released for Friday for three districts – Idukki, Kannur and Kasargod – and ‘Orange Alert’ for the remaining 11 districts. ‘Red Alert’ means that more than 20 centimeters and torrential rains may occur in 24 hours, while ‘Orange Alert’ means that the said area may receive 11 to 20 cm of rainfall in a period of 24 hours. ‘Yellow Alert’ means that the notified area may receive six to 11 cm of rain.

In view of ‘Red Alert’ issued by IMD, on Friday, educational institutions in Kannur and Kasargod districts have been declared a holiday. The IMD had earlier said that due to strong low pressure on the Bay of Bengal, some areas of the state may receive torrential rains for the next few days. The Meteorological Department also stated that moderate rainfall in some parts of the state and strong winds at a speed of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour are expected. The monsoon in the state knocked on May 24, eight days before the scheduled time.
