After coming into existence, Kalyan East Assembly seat, which falls under Kalyan Lok Sabha constituency, has been dominated by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ganpat Gaikwad. He has been representing this area continuously since 2009. Before the 2019 elections, he used to contest elections as an independent candidate. BJP MLA is also seen as a domineering leader and due to his dominance, he often remains in the headlines. On 2 February 2024, Gaikwad was arrested for shooting and injuring Shiv Sena (Shinde) faction leader Mahesh Gaikwad over a land dispute inside a police station in Ulhasnagar, Maharashtra, claiming he had “no remorse”. Firing incident took place in the police station
There is an ongoing dispute between Ganpat Gaikwad and Shiv Sena leader Mahesh Gaikwad over the ownership rights of a property in Kalyan East. Both the parties came face to face on this issue on January 31. According to media reports, both the parties had reached Hill Line Police Station in Ulhasnagar to complain in this matter. Meanwhile, there was another dispute between the two parties and the dispute escalated so much that the BJP MLA was accused of firing on Mahesh Gaikwad and his supporters. In the incident, a Shiv Sena leader and one of his supporters were hit by two bullets each. The BJP MLA claimed that the other party misbehaved with his son, so he opened fire in self-defense.
