Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra has reacted to the comments made by his own party leaders, Kalyan Banerjee and Madan Mitra, regarding the gangrape case in Kolkata. The party had separated itself from these comments.
Mahua Moitra wrote on the social media platform ‘X’ (first Twitter) that hatred towards women in India is not limited to any one party. He further said that TMC condemns these ‘disgusting comments’, no matter what he does.
Moitra also shared a post from TMC’s official ‘X’ handle, in which the comments of MP Banerjee and MLA Mitra were condemned. The party clarified that these comments were his personal views and they had nothing to do with the party.
TMC said in its statement, “These ideas do not reflect the opinion of the party in any way.” The party also reiterated that it holds ‘zero tolerance’ on crimes against women. The post also demanded a ‘strict punishment’ for the people involved in this crime.
Let me tell you, Kolkata Police on Friday arrested three people in the case of gang rape with a law student inside the campus of South Calcutta Law College located in the town area. Two of the three accused arrested are still studying in the same institute, while the third and main accused is Manjit Mishra, an alumnus of the college. A day after the incident, the victim lodged an FIR in the case on 26 June.

Controversy over Kalyan Banerjee and Madan Mitra’s comments
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra faced criticism after their comments on the matter. Banerjee questioned, ‘What can be done if a friend raats his friend?’ Saying that the accused should be arrested, Banerjee asked if there could be police in schools. He asked reporters on Friday, ‘This was done by another student by the students. Who will protect her (victim)? ‘
Meanwhile, MLA Mitra also raised a controversy and said that if the woman does not go to the scene then there is no crime. Mitra said, “If someone offers you to give you a post when the college is closed, do not go, it will not be good.” After which the BJP criticized the comments of the leaders. BJP’s West Bengal co-Bhari Amit Malviya said, “This is to clearly convict the victim.”
