Hours before Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as Maharashtra Chief Minister on Thursday, Shinde camp leader Uday Samant said Eknath Shinde will take oath as Deputy Chief Minister today. Earlier he had said that if Eknath Shinde does not accept the post of Deputy Chief Minister, then none of his party’s MLAs will accept any post in the new government. Samant was quoted as saying that if Eknath Shinde does not accept the post of Deputy Chief Minister, then no Shiv Sena MLA will accept any responsibility in the new government.
Shinde Sena MLA Uday Samant said the party has requested Shinde to take over as deputy chief minister, with a decision expected within the next 30 minutes. The Sena leader also commented on Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)-SP’s Jitendra Awhad meeting Eknath Shinde and said there is no code of conduct on friendship. Samant said that in politics, there is no code of conduct about who is whose friend. Awhad and Shinde both are from Thane and hence they are friends and will stay together.
The swearing-in ceremony will take place at 5.30 pm at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, which will be attended by top BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This will be the 54-year-old’s third term as chief minister. He first served in the top post from October 2014 to November 2019, becoming the youngest chief minister of the state at the age of 44. However, his second term as undivided lasted only for five days from November 23 to 28, 2019. Shiv Sena breaks alliance with BJP. Apart from Fadnavis, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar will also take oath as his deputy.
