In a spectacular show of strength, Trinamool Congress (TMC) has achieved a clean sweep in the West Bengal assembly by-elections. TMC won all six seats including the crucial Madarihat constituency in Alipurduar district. This victory is especially significant for TMC as Madarihat has been a BJP stronghold, where the BJP had gained a lead of 29,000 votes in the 2021 elections. The result marks a dramatic reversal of fortunes in an area traditionally considered a BJP stronghold.

The by-election in Madarihat was triggered after sitting Alipurduar MP and BJP’s Manoj Tigga vacated the assembly seat to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Despite the BJP’s stronghold in the region, TMC’s Jayprakash Toppo won Madarihat by over 28,000 votes, further strengthening the party’s influence in north Bengal. In other constituencies, TMC continued its dominance. Sangeeta Roy won the Sitai seat by a huge margin of 1.3 lakh votes, securing over 1.6 lakh votes against BJP’s Deepak Kumar Ray, who could only secure 35,000 votes.
In Naihati, TMC’s Sanat De defeated BJP’s Rupak Mitra by around 50,000 votes, while Sheikh Rabiul Islam won in Haroa, defeating AISF’s Piyarul Islam by over 1.3 lakh votes. In Medinipur, TMC’s Sujoy Hazra claimed victory over BJP’s Subhajit Roy by about 34,000 votes. TMC’s Falguni Singhababu also emerged victorious in Taldangra, winning against BJP’s Ananya Roy Chakraborty by a margin of over 34,000 votes.
