The Union Home Ministry (MHA) in its notification said that members of the two organizations have been involved in promoting anti-India statements to support terrorist activities and promote separatism in Jammu and Kashmir.

The central government on Tuesday declared two organizations of Jammu and Kashmir-Awami Action Committee (AAC) and Jammu and Kashmir Etihadul Muslimeen (JKIM) as a banned group for a five-year period under the Unlawful Activity (Prevention) Act, 1967. JKIM, headed by AAC and Masroor Abbas Ansari headed by Omar Farooq, was accused of involvement in illegal and harmful activities for national security. The Union Home Ministry (MHA) in its notification said that members of the two organizations have been involved in promoting anti-India statements to support terrorist activities and promote separatism in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Ministry said that the AAC has also indulged in “the country’s integrity, sovereignty and harmful” works. A separate notification issued for JKIM, citing similar allegations, said that the group is involved in the activities that endange national unity and have ties with terrorist support and anti -India propaganda. Citing these reasons, the Ministry of Home Affairs formally declared both organizations an illegal organization under UAPA.
