Next CEC Selection: PM Modi-Rahul Gandhi will select new Election Commissioner, meeting on 17 February

The selection committee headed by PM Modi will hold a meeting next week to finalize the name of the next Chief Election Commissioner of India. Prior to the retirement of the current CEC Rajiv Kumar, the panel will recommend one of the candidates selected by a search committee. The selection committee also includes Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and a Union Cabinet Minister nominated by the Prime Minister.

Rajiv Kumar will retire on February 18
On February 18, the current Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) will hold a panel meeting before the retirement of Rajiv Kumar and finalize a name. After this, the President will appoint the next CEC on the basis of recommendation. According to traditional traditions, before the implementation of a new law last year, the most senior Election Commissioner (EC) was promoted as CEC after retirement of the post holder. According to the new law on the appointments of CEC and EC, a search committee shortlisted the names of five secretary level officers to consider by the Prime Minister -led panel for appointment to the posts. Dnyanesh Kumar is the most senior election commissioner after Rajiv Kumar. His term is till 26 January 2029. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu is the second Election Commissioner. Apart from CEC, a new EC can also be appointed to fill Rajiv Kumar’s retirement vacancy.
