Odisha custodial assault: Indian Army launches helpline for soldiers and retired soldiers after custodial assault incident in Odisha

In response to recent incidents, including a custodial attack on an Army officer and his fiancee in Odisha, the Indian Army has launched a 24/7 helpline for soldiers and veterans. The helpline number, 155306, provides nationwide assistance in emergencies, especially cases of attack or crisis.
Staffed by military police for quick response
The helpline is manned by trained military police personnel, both men and women, who can respond efficiently to emergency calls. When a call comes in, the helpline team will record the details and coordinate with local provost units and civic authorities for quick response across the country. The Provost Unit is a specialized military police unit responsible for maintaining law and order within the armed forces.
Streamlined support with nationwide reach
The helpline, which can be dialed without any prefix on all major telecommunications networks, is required to provide callers with details of its service and a brief description of the incident. The helpdesk then coordinates with the nearest Provost Police unit to ensure prompt assistance. Case tracking software has also been implemented to ensure monitoring and follow-up of incidents.

For emergencies only
This service is only for emergencies, which does not include non-crisis cases like land disputes or marital conflicts. The initiative is in line with the Army’s commitment to strengthen support and security measures for personnel amid growing security concerns.

Background: Need for action in case of attack
The helpline was launched following an incident that took place in Odisha on September 15, where an Army officer and his fiancee were allegedly attacked while in custody. This incident happened after he was surrounded by miscreants in Bhubaneswar. The case has since been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), with the Army raising concerns about the incident with the Odisha government.
