One person was killed and twelve others injured in a rare terrorist attack targeting tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack took place around 2:30 pm on Tuesday afternoon, when a group of militants wearing uniforms fired at tourists at Basaron Maidan in Pahalgam. The bodies were scattered in the pictures found from the place of the attack and some women were seen crying, while the locals ran to help them. An eyewitness reported that unidentified gunmen opened fire on tourists, injuring many people.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah posted on X and said that I am incredibly shocked. This attack on our visitors is a disgusting task. The criminals of this attack are animals, inhuman and hatred. No word is enough for condemnation. I express my condolences to the families of the dead. I have talked to my colleague and have gone to the hospital to oversee the arrangements for the injured. I am going back to Srinagar immediately. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha wrote to X, directed the district administration and health officials to provide immediate medical facilities to the people admitted to Pahalgam. An injured tourist has been rushed to GMC Anantnag. I pray for all the injured to get well soon.

The Basaron meadow is located about 5 kilometers from Pahalgam Hill Station and can only be reached here by foot or pony. Soon after the attack, security forces laid siege to the area. Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba’s local branch The Resistance Front has claimed responsibility for the attack. After the terrorist attack, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called a high level meeting. Senior officials of Home Secretary, Intelligence Bureau and Ministry of Home Affairs are attending this meeting. All the officers including the Director General of Police (DGP) of Jammu and Kashmir are attending this meeting.
