Students protested fiercely during the visit of State Education Minister Structure Basu on Saturday at Jadavpur University (JU) in Kolkata, West Bengal. During this time some students allegedly surrounded the minister’s car and broke their glass. Not only this, the protesters also assaulted the minister. On the other hand, the protesters alleged that some students were injured when the minister was hit by a vehicle involved in the convoy. At present, there is peace in the university campus.
The protest was organized by members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) and other leftist student organizations of the CPI (M) student wing. This protest was done to demand the student union elections to be held at the earliest. Representatives of West Bengal College and University Professors Association (WBAPA) lodged a complaint against student organizations at Jadavpur police station.
Along with the acting Vice Chancellor of the university, Bhaskar Gupta, a section of left students misbehaved. This happened when he went to the nearby private medical college and hospital to see Indranuj Roy, one of the injured students. When Gupta reached the hospital to meet the injured student at around 12.30 pm on Saturday, angry students abused him.

Gupta told reporters on Sunday morning, “I think he is sad and distressed by Roy’s injuries and we are all wishing for him to get well soon”. A university official said that Gupta also spoke to Basu on Sunday morning and discussed the situation with him. He said, conducting the student union elections is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Higher Education. However, we have repeatedly raised this issue before the government.
