Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep beginning today. Mr Modi will reach Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu where he will attend the 38th Convocation Ceremony of Bharathidasan University today. Prime Minister will also inaugurate, dedicate to the nation and lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over 20 thousand crore rupees related to aviation, rail, road, oil and gas, shipping and higher education sectors at a public programme in Tiruchirappalli today. Mr Modi will inaugurate the new terminal building at the Tiruchirappalli International Airport built at a cost of over 1,100 crore rupees.
Akashvani correspondent reports, Tiruchirapalli has become like a fortress with multi layered security for today’s event. The Prime Minister will inaugurate the railroad and other infrastructure projects in the State. Multiple rail projects connecting the Southern districts will be inaugurated. This includes Five national highway projects which will facilitate commercial activities to important centres and also to ports in the State . He will also lay the foundation for four laning roads from Mugaiyur to Marakkanam connecting ports in the East Coast Road.
The Prime Minister will dedicate the General Cargo berth – 2 of Kamarajar Port and lay the foundation stone for Petroleum and Natural Gas projects worth more than Rs. 9000 Crore. The projects include a long multi product pipeline which will pass through Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Andhra, Kerala and Puducherry.
Mr.Modi will also dedicate the Demonstration Fast Reactor Fuel Reprocessing Plant at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research at Kalpakkam developed at a cost of Rs. 400 Crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Lakshadweep this afternoon, where he will inaugurate and dedicate to the nation projects worth 1,150 crore rupees in the archipelago. On his arrival at Agatti island, Mr Modi will address the beneficiaries of various central government schemes. He will stay in Bangaram Island for the night.
Tomorrow, he will inaugurate the Kochi-Lakshadweep Submarine Optical Fiber connection project, which will increase the internet connection speed in Lakshadweep from 1.7 Gbps to 200 Gbps — an increase of more than 100 times. This will ensure a paradigm shift in the communication infrastructure in the islands, enabling faster and more reliable internet services, telemedicine, e-governance, digital banking, and educational initiatives among other things.
The Prime Minister will also dedicate to the nation the Low Temperature Desalination Plant at Kadamat island, which has a capacity to produce 1.5 lakh litres of clean drinking water every day. He will also dedicate the Functional Household Tap Connections in Agatti and Minicoy islands. Mr Modi will inaugurate the first battery-backed solar power project of Lakshadweep at Kavaratti, which will help reduce dependency on diesel based power generation plant in the islands.
He will also dedicate the new administrative block and an 80-men barrack in India Reserve Battalion complex at Kavaratti.
Mr Modi will lay the foundation stone for the renovation of the Primary Health Care facility in Kalpeni and construction of five model anganwadi centres in the islands of Androth, Chetlat, Kadamat, Agatti and Minicoy.
The Prime Minister who arrives in Kochi tomorrow afternoon, will leave for Thrissur by helicopter, where he will address a women’s meet at Thekkinkadu Maidan, before emplaning for New Delhi.
