A day after Sheikh Hasina resigned as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister and left the country, President Mohammad Shahabuddin announced the dissolution of the country’s parliament to make way for the formation of an interim administration. Based on the decision of a meeting of President Shahabuddin with the chiefs of the three armed forces, leaders of various political parties, representatives of civil society and leaders of the student movement against discrimination, the national parliament was dissolved. It further said that Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia has been released from jail. The US has revoked Sheikh Hasina’s US visa. It has said that Sheikh Hasina is not welcome in the US. Relations between Sheikh Hasina and the US were very strained.

Earlier in the day, BNP chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia was also released. The presidential press team said a meeting led by Shahabuddin took a unanimous decision to release Begum Khaleda Zia immediately. “The meeting also decided to release all those arrested during the students’ protests,” the presidential statement said.
Zia, 78, the former Bangladesh Prime Minister, has been hospitalised due to poor health. In 2018, she was convicted of corruption and sentenced to 17 years in prison. According to Al Jazeera, she and Hasina had a long-running feud and she was accused of abusing her position by stealing nearly USD250,000 in donations meant for an orphanage trust.
