Kolkata. The fast unto death of junior doctors of West Bengal for their demands after the incident at the local RG Kar Hospital continued for the ninth day on Sunday. Meanwhile, people in different parts of the state are observing a “symbolic fast” to show solidarity with the hunger strikers. So far, three of the junior doctors who are on ‘fast unto death’ in Kolkata and Siliguri city in the northern part of the state have been admitted to the hospital after their condition deteriorated.
A leader of the agitating ‘Junior Doctors Forum’ said, “Their (strangers) condition is worsening, but the state administration remains indifferent.” Meanwhile, a group of alumni of RG Kar Hospital has reached the hospital for a 12-hour symbolic fast to show solidarity with the students who are on fast unto death. They, however, faced resistance from Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel deployed on security duty at the hospital following the court order.

The alumni said that no matter what happens, they will continue with their proposed symbolic fast. Most of these are senior citizens. Many people in Malda and Murshidabad districts are also observing a “symbolic fast” during the day. The agitating doctors have urged people not to cook food on Sunday to show solidarity and support towards their cause. In the last few days when Durga Puja festival was going on, a large number of common people came to the fast site.

The fast unto death, which started from October 5, has started in two phases after the ‘work bandh’ that lasted for about 50 days. Their agitation began after the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor on duty inside the government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Although the Kolkata Police arrested one person the next day, the CBI is now investigating the case on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Friday urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to intervene before the situation worsens. Doctors at private hospitals have called for a 48-hour “partial strike” in medical establishments in the state from October 14, in solidarity with the agitating junior doctors who are fasting unto death. Doctors under the banner of Health Professionals of Private Hospitals, however, said emergency services would remain operational in all medical facilities.
