Saudi officials announced that more than 269,000 people with no Haj permit have been stopped from entering Mecca as part of comprehensive action to implement the rules before this year’s Haj pilgrimage. The internal ministry said that the purpose of this action is to reduce congestion and prevent the recurrence of tragedies related to the heat of last year, for which it has held partly unauthorized pilgrims responsible. Lieutenant General Mohammad al-Omari said in a press briefing that there is no softening. The pilgrim is in our eyes, and whoever disobeys is in our hands. Authorities have imposed a fine of up to $ 5,000 on violators including Saudi citizens and residents. More than 23,000 Saudi residents have already been punished, and licenses of 400 Haj Tour operators have been canceled for regulatory violations. Despite strict measures, the scale of unauthorized entry efforts reveals a deep demand to participate in religious rituals.
