Shoaib Iqbal, MLA of Aam Aadmi Party, which is in power in Delhi, was born on 1 May 1958. Iqbal is a member of the Delhi Assembly. He has been MLA from Matia Mahal assembly constituency 6 times. In the 2015 assembly elections, Shoaib was defeated by Aam Aadmi Party’s Asim Ahmed Khan. In 2020, Shoaib Iqbal joined the ruling Aam Aadmi Party just before the Delhi Assembly elections. He also served as the Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly.
Personal life
Shoaib Iqbal was married in 1980 and has two sons, Aale Muhammad Iqbal and Ahmed Hasan Iqbal. Ale Muhammad Iqbal is the Deputy Mayor of MCD. His family is also active in the politics of Old Delhi. His nephew Khurram Iqbal was a councilor from Jama Masjid. His nephew’s mother-in-law Sultana Aabad Khan is a councilor from Jama Masjid ward. Shoaib Iqbal’s close aide Hafeez’s daughter was also elected councilor from Sita Ram Bazar constituency in 2022 Delhi MCD elections.
Know the political journey
Iqbal was active in student politics during his college days and Zakir Hussain was the secretary of the student union at Delhi College. Shoaib has gained fame in the initial days by harassing poor people and demanding money from them to carry out construction activities. After MCD officials tried to stop an illegal construction, Iqbal attacked their official. He was also involved in a controversial land deal between an alleged local mafia and a Dubai-based company to open a luxury hotel near Jama Masjid.
AAP MLA Shoaib Iqbal had contested his first election in 1993 on Janata Dal ticket. He later joined Janata Dal (United) and led the minority front of the party. In 2014 he joined the Indian National Congress party and subsequently won the Delhi Assembly elections from Matiya Mahal (Assembly constituency) five times in 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013. In the 2015 assembly elections, Shoaib was defeated by Aam Aadmi Party’s Asim Ahmed Khan. In 2020, Shoaib Iqbal joined the ruling Aam Aadmi Party just before the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections. He also served as the Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly.
