The Income Tax Department is checking the source of money used to buy smuggling gold. The inquiry led by women inspectors Shweta and Inspector Ravipal expect lighting on potential financial networks and any partner involved in the operation. On June 3, Rao’s mother filed a habeas corpus petition before the Karnataka High Court, challenging the validity of her daughter’s custody in the gold smuggling case.

Kannada actress Ranya Rao will be questioned by the Income Tax Department for three days in the case of gold smuggling. Special court has given permission to interrogate for economic crimes, which will be between 10 am to 5 pm from today to 13 June. According to the direction of the court, videography of inquiry will be done inside Parappana Aghara Central Jail, where Rao is currently imprisoned. On March 3, Bangalore Airport was arrested on charges of smuggling. Gold rods were allegedly hidden using straps and tissues around its waist and calves in a detailed personal search. Extra gold rods and chopped pieces were also found in his shoes and front pockets. The seized gold is said to be of 24 carat purity, which costs more than Rs 12.56 crore. Rao has been booked under Customs Act and smuggling activity Prevention Act.

Ranya Rao was granted bail by the Special Court for economic crimes on 20 May, but he is in custody due to a separate case filed under the Prevention of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974 (Cofepota).
