Amid persistent speculation that Bangladesh’s ousted leader Sheikh Hasina is in Delhi, it was claimed that she would fly to London. After the Labour Party’s landslide victory last month, the UK government led by Sir Keir Starmer has also said that asylum seekers must first go to a safe country where they arrive. The UK has a proud record of providing protection to those who need it.
However, there is no provision to allow someone to travel to the UK to seek asylum or temporary asylum. A UK Home Office spokesperson said people in need of international protection must first claim asylum in a safe country. Sources indicate formal asylum requests are being processed.
