The United Nations Security Council voted on Friday in favor of extending the period of arms ban on South Sudan. Due to increasing political tension in South Sudan, the United Nations has warned that the country may again get caught in the Civil War.

Nine countries voted in support of the US -sponsored resolution to extend the period of restrictions including arms ban, which is the minimum number to pass the resolution. Six countries – Russia, China, Algeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Pakistan – did not participate in the voting.

The period of arms restriction, travel restriction and freeze of its assets against South Sudan included in the black list of United Nations restrictions has been extended for one year i.e. till 31 May 2026.

The country had high expectations of peace and stability in this country after the oil -rich South Sudan gained independence in 2011, but in December 2013, the country was stuck in the civil war when a struggle started in the loyal forces of the country’s largest ethnic group Danka and the legislature of the country’s second largest ethnic group Nuer, a leader of the country’s second largest ethnic group Nuer.

After this, Macha was included in the government as the Vice President under the 2018 peace agreement but the agreement has been critical and its implementation has been slow. The presidential election in the country has been postponed till 2026.
