Varun was elected MP from Sultanpur in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. But in 2019, he was given a ticket from Pilibhit in place of his mother Maneka Gandhi, while Maneka was fielded from Sultanpur. Both of them won their respective seats.

BJP leader Varun Gandhi on Thursday campaigned for his mother and the saffron party's candidate Maneka Gandhi from Sultanpur constituency, which will go to polls in the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 25. “There is one parliamentary constituency in the country where people call their MP not 'MP' but 'Maa'…I have come here to garner support not just for my mother but for the mother of Sultanpur,” he said. Next to Amethi, the Sultanpur Lok Sabha seat is crucial as BJP candidate Gandhi is pitted against Samajwadi Party rival Ram Bhual Nishad and BSP candidate Udraj Verma.

Both of them won their respective seats. Voting is to be held in Sultanpur on May 25 in the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections. Earlier, she had won by a margin of about 14,000 votes. This time the BJP candidate is working hard to win by a good margin. Among the top BJP leaders, only UP CM Yogi Adityanath has campaigned for him in Sultanpur.

Adityanath addressed a rally in her favour in Qazipur on Wednesday. Maneka's son and Pilibhit MP Varun Gandhi was not given a ticket by the BJP this time. Varun addressed election rallies in support of his mother on Thursday, the last day of campaigning. Neither her nephew Rahul Gandhi nor her niece Priyanka Gandhi Vadra came to campaign against Maneka. Maneka Gandhi says that neither Ram Mandir is an election issue in her constituency nor is Varun Gandhi's ticket being cut an issue. She said that the people of her constituency are happy with the construction of a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya but “this is not an issue in the elections here.”
