Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed all states and union territories (UT) to increase monitoring on dairy analogs during March, so that the festive season can be taken into consideration. The purpose of this active measure is to prevent adulteration of foods and wrong labeling during increasing demand. According to the Food Safety and Standard (Food Products Standard and Food Commerce) regulations, dairy analogs are products in which non-milk components are partially or fully replacing milk components, but are similar to milk or milk products in appearance, texture and functionality. Dairy analogs are not considered milk, milk products or mixed milk products. When standardized milk products are replaced by major milk components such as milk fats or milk protein by replacing them with vegetable oil, fat or protein, the resulting product is classified as analog.
