Ten people have been arrested after clashes broke out during counting of votes in ‘All Nyishi Students Union (ANSU)’ elections in Itanagar. Police gave this information on Tuesday. Superintendent of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh said that during the counting of votes at around 9 o’clock, a clash started between supporters of two candidates in Siddharth Hall.

Police gave this information on Tuesday. Superintendent of Police (Capital) Rohit Rajbir Singh said that during the counting of votes at around 9 pm on Monday night, a clash broke out between supporters of two candidates in Siddharth Hall. He said that his supporters attacked each other with weapons and sticks due to which five people were injured.
He said the situation worsened when firing started from both sides. Singh said that taking immediate action, the police fired tear gas shells, ‘stun grenades (non-lethal shells that produce very loud noise and glare)’ and resorted to lathi charge to control the situation. He said the situation was under control but sporadic firing continued from nearby hilltops. He said that many policemen were injured in this violence.
The Superintendent of Police said that clashes broke out again between rival groups in hospitals, due to which the injured people were forced to flee. He said that three bullets were recovered from the spot where bullets were being fired on the crowd. He said that an FIR has been registered at Itanagar police station under relevant provisions of BNS and Arms Act. Singh said that the situation is under control in Siddharth Hall and counting of votes is going on. He said that efforts are being made to identify the people who opened fire. ANSU was established in 1982 and is headquartered in Itanagar. It is one of the largest student organizations in the Northeast.
