The latest quarterly report of the Global Nuclear Monitoring Institution at the end of May stated that a minor civil construction work was going on in the reactor, and Iran hopes that it will be operational this year and its operation will begin in 2026.
Israeli jet aircraft bombed an atomic reactor under construction in Central Iran during a wave of air strikes on the seventh day of conflict between the two countries. The Israeli army said that it targeted the core seal of the Arak heavy water reactor so that it could not be used for nuclear weapons development. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that the reactor was attacked and had no nuclear material. IAEA said Iran has removed the calendar or reactor core of Arak, and has made it disabled. The latest quarterly report of the Global Nuclear Monitoring Institution at the end of May stated that a minor civil construction work was going on in the reactor, and Iran hopes that it will be operational this year and its operation will begin in 2026.
What is Arak heavy water nuclear plant?
Arak Heavy Water Reactor is 250 km (155 mi) south-west from Tehran. It allegedly helps cool atomic reactors and also forms plutonium. Its construction stopped after the sanctions on Iran. After a treaty with Western countries in 2015, Iran again started the plant work. According to the report, there was a preparation to start it next year.
IAEA warning is important
However, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently warned that it was not able to monitor Iran’s heavy water production properly as Iran has imposed some restrictions on inspectors. IAEA inspectors last visited the Arak reactor on 14 May.
