The market of speculation in Dhaka is hot over the possible resignation of Dr. Mohammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to the Interim Government. Amid rumors, National Citizen Party (NCP) convenor Nahid Islam met Yunus on Thursday evening (22 May) in his official residence Jamuna.
The report states that since Thursday afternoon, the speculation of Yunus’s resignation on social media has been widely spreading, on which different reactions and comments are coming out. In view of increasing uncertainty, Nahid Islam visited Jamuna to talk directly to the Chief Advisor. This disclosure was made by National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Nid Islam after meeting Younus in the first day.

Islam told BBC Bangla, “We have been hearing about Sir’s resignation since this morning, so I went to meet him to discuss it. They told me that they are thinking about it. He feels that the current situation is such that they cannot continue working.” The NCP urged Yunus to remain strong, Islam, which emerged prominently in Younus’s informal protection earlier this year, said that the Chief Advisor has expressed real concern about the situation of cases. Islam said, “He said that until political parties reach a common land, they will not be able to work.”

Despite Younus’s fears, the NCP convenor urged him to remain firm. Islam said, “I asked him to remain strong to respect the security of the country, its future and public rebellion.” He said that he hoped that political parties would eventually unite and provide Yunus necessary support to fulfill their duties effectively. Islam said, “I hope all people will come together and support them.” However, the NCP leader said that if Yunus cannot do his work then there is no point in his post.
He said, “If the political party wants them to resign now … then why would they continue in office, if they do not get that place of trust, that place of assurance?” Although the details of the meeting are unclear, Dhaka sources have told News18 that Younus has expressed its displeasure over being in the government. Nahid Islam told BBC Bangla that Younus is “thinking about resigning.” Islam told BBC Bangla that the Chief Advisor has expressed concern that they would not be able to work in the current situation in the country.
Islam told BBC Bangla, “He said that they are thinking about it. He felt that the situation is such that they would not be able to work.” However, Islam said that he requested Yunus not to take a big decision like resignation. Tension within the interim administration has been increasing for the last few weeks. Remarkable, differences between Yunus and Bangladesh Army Chief General War-Uz-Zaman are becoming increasingly clear. There is also increasing dissatisfaction in other political groups regarding the proposed human corridor, which is a matter of important controversy.
According to sources, the army chief has accused the interim government of sidelining the army in important decisions, saying that many tasks are being done without proper consultation. She has also emphasized the immediate need for an inclusive election, questioning how an untouched interim government can connect with powerful external actors and take big decisions without a public mandate.
