56.4% of diseases in India are attributable to unhealthy diet: ICMR

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Wednesday said that 56.4 percent of diseases in India are due to consumption of unhealthy diet. ICMR has issued guidelines regarding 17 types of dietary intake to meet essential nutrient requirements and avoid diseases like obesity and diabetes.

The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), working under ICMR, said that eating a diet rich in nutrients can reduce heart diseases and high blood pressure to a great extent and diabetes can also be avoided.

That said, adopting a healthy lifestyle can prevent premature death. NIN urges to eat less salt, use less amount of oil and fat, get proper exercise, eat less sugar and junk food.

To prevent obesity, she advised adopting a healthy lifestyle and consuming nutrient-rich food. A multidisciplinary committee of experts led by Dr. Hemlatha R, Director, ICMR-NIN, has drafted the 'Dietary Guidelines for Indians' (DGI) and has also undergone various scientific reviews.

It includes 17 types of diets. The guidelines state that a balanced diet should not contain more than 45 percent of calories from cereals and millets. Similarly, it should contain up to 15 percent calories from pulses, beans and meat. She recommends consuming dry fruits, vegetables, fruits and milk to get the remaining calories.
