Rome . Pope Francis launched the second phase of a sweeping reform project of the Catholic Church, calling for women to be given more senior positions in the church. Pope Francis presided over an opening synod in St. Peter’s Square with 368 bishops and laity. They will meet over the next three weeks to discuss the future of the Church and make it more responsive to the needs of Catholics today. After facing protests and objections during the Synod’s first session last year, many of the most controversial issues have been officially taken out of discussion.

These include issues such as ordination to LGBTQ+ positions and allowing women to serve as deacons. Pope Francis has assigned these topics to 10 study groups that are working in parallel to the synod. With these issues handed over to study groups, the question is what will actually emerge when the synod ends on October 26 and the final proposals are presented to Francis for consideration. Francis began the reform process in 2021 to pursue his goal of building a Church that is more inclusive.
