It is noteworthy that 9 lakh Indians are part of Kuwait’s workforce, which is 30 percent of the total workforce of the country. Overall, Indians constitute 21 percent (1 million) of the total population of the Gulf country. Kuwait, one of India’s top trading partners, has a bilateral trade target of US $ 10.47 billion in the financial year 2023-24. Kuwait is India’s sixth largest crude oil supplier, meeting 3 percent of the country’s energy needs.

For the first time, Indian exports to Kuwait reached US$2 billion, while Kuwait Investment Authority’s investments in India exceeded US$10 billion. India and Kuwait have traditionally had friendly relations, dating back to pre-oil Kuwait, when maritime trade with India was the backbone of its economy. Until 1961, the Indian rupee remained legal tender in Kuwait, symbolizing the deep economic and cultural ties between the two countries. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established in 1961.
